Roughly my days is -

8.30ish - 9.30ish I call overnight applications and deal with urgent emails and delete the usual free money & sex pills from my friends in Nigeria.

lots of coffee

10.00am til about 1pm - New business BALTIC calls/ get jobs onboard

I always take at least 45 mins out of the office for lunch/quick pint etc
i think it's important to get away from the desk for a bit

2pm til about 5ish - Headhunt candidates from clients competitors for roles.

5ish til about 6pm (6.30-7pm if i'm "on fire" or need to interview face2face) client/candidate callbacks/post ads/admin/collect pills/money from Nigeria.

I'm sure others work differently but it's worked for me last 7 years

cheers
John

I work from home and generally my day goes:

8-9am Vodka (takes the edge off and sets me up for the day)
9-10am Thinking about morning snack
10-10:30 Morning snack / coffee
10:30 -11:30 Shaking head and tutting about why there isn't any business out there.
11:30 12:30 Plan what to have for lunch
12:30 -1:30 Lunch ( I agree it's important to get away from the desk now and again)
1:30 - 3:30 Quick Snooze and vainly look through a few of the emails form my Nigerian friends
3:30 - 4:30 Wash and get dressed (In the hope I can convince my missus I have actually been doing some work)

Working from home can be such a blessing sometimes !!!!!!!!

Graham's posting left me rolling around the floor laughing. I only wish I were home based as the embarrassment of doing this in the middle of an open plan office with my team surrounding me has left me needing a fer vodka's.

Thanks for cheering us up Graham, great posting!

"How do you turn the computer on again?" - B

You don't, you call the Tech Guys out and get them to turn it on for you or at least that's what my wife does!

Sadly Craig when you're on your own you become the tech guy :( Seem to spend more time sorting out issues with the business than actually recruiting lately.

I plan my day as follows:

9 - 10 admin, except Monday which is team meeting, goal setting, review of previous week.

10 - 12, business development (cold calls, service calls, client meetings)

12 - 1: lunch (always try to get one, best part of the day!)

1 - 2: admin

2- 4: business development as above

4 - 5:30: candidate interview, candidate catch up calls, lead generation

Those are core hours, but if we're busy we work longer. Always try and finish at 5 on friday though.

admin includes absolutely everything that isn't business development: letter writing, printing, responding to emails, emailers, looking in paper or online for jobs, preparing for visits, interviews and registrations.

can't always stick to that if you need to see a client or candidate early or late, but it gives us some sort of structure to aim towards. there's also no excuse for not doing some quality calls if you have 4 solid hours every day to do them, without admin interruptions

just wanted to add that before i took someone on, i had pretty much no structure. just did what needed to be done to get the jobs on.
however, i think when you have a team, no matter the size, it helps to all be doing the same thing at the same time and creating a buzz

9-12 - winning new business
1-5 - filling jobs
5-5.30 administration

He he, right with you Graham :-)
You forgot to include a slot for pottering around the UKRecruiter forum - also a vital part of the business day. I would write more, but I am off to get a snack.

Jenny, proper daily planning is crucial to success In recruitment, However I think you need something a bit more comprehensive than a few paragraphs posted posted on this board, regardless of how sensible those few paragraphs may be.

Go to Amazon.com (US. Bottom of amazonUK has a link), and look up a book enttled "Search and Placement! A Handbook for Success" by industry authorities Larry Nobles and Steven Finkel. Mr Finkel also has his own book there ("Breakthrough!") but I'd start with the Nobles/Finkel book first if I were you. Both are highly effective in a UK market, as I have good reason to know.

You need a proper recruitment education if you are to do well (we all do), and these two books are it.

This is a very interesting thread for me as I have only been working from home for a short while and finding it really hard not only to have a routine, but some days to know where to start. As I am new to this industry, it is a real challenge, but reading some of your comments helps me get through the day (shame it doesn't pay the bills though).

Kim I've sent you an email with a timetable on it. When I get thrown off track and start working all over the place I rely on it.

I found it really hard to work from home personally and I know others who have as well.

Whereabouts do you live? Are there any others in the same situation who you could office share with? Have you thought about moving into offices? Email me if you have any queries.
