Job Boards vs Newspapers in UK & Europe

Hi to all from New Zealand. Down here in NZ the percentage of Internet job advertising recently exceeded newspaper advertising for the first time. While most recruiters migrated to the Net several years ago, lots of employers are still using their traditional media and methods such as newspaper classifieds.

Meanwhile in Australia, our nearest international market, the split is 90% Internet to 10% newspapers.

Does anyone know the actual statistics for the split between Internet job advertising and newspaper advertising in the UK, and does this split also apply across Europe?

Paul,

Classified Job advertising online is gaining pace month on month over print media but still has a long way to go in the UK and will take significantly more market share yet.

Meanwhile, the publishers well Trinity Mirror's Sly Bailey for one, still think that print media is in some sort of Cycle and that print will miraculously come flying back - shes completely deluded!

The last month or so i think print media had a small upturn but the trend for them is without doubt downwards as online takes up more and more market share each year.

In the UK some publishers are still to enter the online market place but we do have one or two that are carving out the space more effectively. Telegraph is one to watch.

I dont know about you but i cant remember the last time i purchased a daily newsaper!, i can read all the news i want online from google news!.

In time they wont be able to give newspapers away for free if you ask me.

So to conclude, Online is currently gaining pace, we are not up as high as Australia, The United States and some parts of Europe yet but its just a matter of time.

90% online to 10% print in the future in the UK is more than likely

Thanks InterestedOne for your reply. Can you (or anyone else) advise if there still significant numbers of employers running classified job advertisements in local newspapers? Could you guess the percentage of these vs on-line?

I have a very good reason for asking these questions, that I may be able to share with interested parties.

Have a look at:

Online overtook advertising in national newspapers in 2005. Online is on course to be the largest channel by 2009.

I work for an oilandgasjobsearch.com. I used to use the Telegraph newspaper consistently for leads. There used to be over 2 pages of classified job advertising in the engineering section. This week there was 1 advert.

Online advertising still has a lot to learn but good job boards have made huge impact into the revenues of the offline press. Hence the reason why papers are either launching their own branded sites or buying up established job boards.

Alastair,

Your graph illustrates the change in the landscape perfectly from offline print media to online solutions. The growth rate of online and the decline in print media classified job advertising is just staggering!

It makes a very interesting read. Based on your previously detailed work it does indeed look like, as you post that Publishers will be in for a harder time during 2009.

Meanwhile a number of publishers on the other hand think that the decline in print media classified advertising is not as a result of customers using online advertising instead. They believe they are in a cycle and are now comming through the other side.

It will be interesting to see whos right - My own viewpoint is that i would agree with you, i think print media classified advertising will continue to decline and online will continue to grow

yet currently some publishers

Alastair's graph is very interesting. It shows that only last year Print job advertising generated 5x more revenue than On-line.

I'm guessing that a large chunk of Print job ad revenue comes from the large display ads in the Sat/Sun Executive Jobs Section, run by corporates via the traditional ad agencies and costing thousands each.

I'm interested to know if a significant % of day to day vacancies for junior to mid level retail/admin/trades/sales etc. positions are still being listed as classified (run-on) ads in regional newspapers? Is the local newspaper still the usual place for conservative local SME's to place their job ads?

In fact and i think this comes out of Alastair's analysis too - the bulk (over 50%) of teh existing print advertising is local press not national press. Therefore most adverts are for "junior to mid level retail/admin/trades/sales etc" and i agree entirely with Paul that the reason is UK corporate conservatism and habit buying where recruitment is concerned.
I keep reading Sly Bailey (CEO Trinity Mirror - owner of vast regional newspapers such as Birmingham Evening Post) describe newspaper ad revenue's downturn being cyclical - and i think what planet is she on? she surely does not actually believe that.

Thanks for feedback, especially to Alastair and Don. As well as the answers you gave, your blogs and websites have provided a lot more of the information I’ve been looking for about the UK job classified advertising market.

Are many forum readers aware of the Innovation Adoption Curve? An explanation is found here:
http://www.12manage.com/methods_rogers_innovation_adoption_curve.html
This was made famous in IT circles by Geoffrey Moore in “Crossing the Chasm”:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossing_the_Chasm

The adoption curve shows the rate that new innovations (such as Internet Job Advertising) are adopted and describes the types of people who take up innovations and the market stages and percentages over time.

Down here in NZ we are right at the top of the curve where the “late majority” are increasingly tipping their toes into the new technology. This represents a massive market opportunity, and we have developed a “killer-app” (more IT jargon) that is driving massive growth in our business here in NZ by capitalising on this opportunity.

Since the UK market is 20 times bigger than NZ I’m very interested in talking to potential partners who would like to step “inside the tornado” (Google that phrase).
